What Will I Be Doing During Residential Treatment?

Residential TreatmentEach day in residential treatment will start with a morning meditation. All of the residents will come together to read an inspirational text, set goals for the day, and participate in group meditation.

Education

Educational activities take place throughout the day. Lectures, documentary watching, and participating in other activities provide education about addiction, mental health, co-occurring disorders, spirituality, and more. Learning is a part of any change.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is an effective tool in treatment for addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders. In the group therapy process, the benefit of mirroring comes into play. Someone might be reserved and unwilling to open up in individual therapy. In group therapy, they see their peers opening up, releasing their emotions, and getting important feedback from others. Inspired, they become willing to speak up, offer feedback to others, and receive feedback from others as well.

Group therapy might take the position of a topic group. Topic groups can focus on a specific therapy type like cognitive behavioral therapy or dialectical behavioral therapy. Other topics might include 12 step education, life skills, trauma, and more.

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is an other important tool for the treatment process. With an individual therapist, clients are able to probe deeply into underlying issues together. Gaining insight and direction, the individual therapist guides the rest of the treatment process with the clinical team.

Physical Fitness

Exercise and physical activity is a proven benefit to recovering from drug and alcohol addiction in addition to co-occurring disorders. Physical activity reduces stress, reduces inflammation, and  reduces symptoms of cravings. Physical fitness could include working out at a gym, working with a personal trainer, rock climbing, surfing, kayaking, hiking, and many other activities.

Nutrition

In residential treatment, all meals and snacks are provided for. Though clients aren’t cooking, they are learning about healthy nutrition for recovery from addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders.

Adjunctive Therapies

Art therapy, hypnotherapy, drama therapy, and a host of other therapies supplement the primary clinical process. Clients benefit from the change up in activity. Their brains are given a rest from processing through talk therapy. Making emotional and spiritual discoveries in new ways helps them feel more more connected to themselves and their treatment.

Twelve Step Meetings

Each night, there will be an opportunity to end the day with an offsite visit or an onsite visit to a twelve step meeting. At meetings, clients have a chance to meet local members of the recovery community, meet a sponsor, and start working the twelve steps.
