Stress is a complicated phenomenon.  It is defined as the body’s response to emotional tension from demanding circumstances.  Many people think of stress as a negative burden of life.  Yet, stress can actually be positive.  There are two different types of stress: eustress and distress.  Eustress refers to positive types of stress that cause excitement and maximize production.  Distress is the body’s natural reaction to unpleasant and negative types of stress.  The human life, whether you’re in recovery or not, is full of stressors.
Most of the eustress you come across in life is short-term.  The body reacts to situations such as a new job, marriage, birth of a child, or buying a home.  Eustress can be described as feeling terrified, but in a good way.  These situations cause adrenaline and enable you to perform tasks more efficiently.  The presence of eustress actually motivates you and is considered to be beneficial for your mental health.

Distress is perceived as the negative type of stress.  People can become stressed when major life circumstances happen such as the death of a loved one, being fired, divorce, and financial or legal problems.  Distress is not effective for an individual and can cause detrimental effects to the body, such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and addiction.  Addiction could even refer to any substance, such as drugs, alcohol, food, or sex.  The body and mind become completely overwhelmed by tension and seeks a release.

Developing coping strategies to effectively handle stressful situations is crucial.  Without ways of dealing with stress, you may turn to dangerous situations that could jeopardize your sobriety.  If your stress is coming from overscheduling yourself, try to manage your time more effectively.  Allow yourself to take time and relax.  If your distress is brought on by unavoidable circumstances such as death, try talking to someone.  Grief support groups, twelve step meetings, or talking with a friend or mentor are all effective ways to work through feeling of distress.  Physical exercise and relaxation techniques are additionally highly effective.  They release positive neurotransmitters in the brain that enhance moods and release stress.  Getting enough sleep is a good defense against stress, as well.  Sleep deprivation makes you more vulnerable to feelings of worry and anxiety, which build up and cause distress.  Accepting that life will bring stress your way and being prepared for it can minimize the effects it has on your body.  Utilizing effective coping strategies will help you the next time you run into life’s circumstances.
