Caffeine is one of the trickiest and socially accepted addictions in the world.  You can find caffeinated drinks on practically every corner.  Their presence in gas stations and pretty much any store you go in can make it difficult to overcome caffeine addiction.  Many people get up in the morning and have their warm cup of coffee or tea, not thinking of long-term effects it might have on their body.  Yet, even 100 milligrams of caffeine, or the amount equivalent in one cup of coffee can create withdrawal effects if it were stopped.

Caffeine is present in many other items besides beverages, such as chocolate and some desserts.  When most people think about addiction, they picture someone addicted to a drug such as heroin or methamphetamine and living on the streets.  Addiction affects people of all statures; it does not discriminate.  Many don’t think of caffeine as a drug because it does not have adverse social effects like many other substances.  It is, in fact, advertised and promoted.  Yet, caffeine is the same as other drugs in the sense that an individual builds a tolerance over time.  At one time, one cup of coffee would have been too much, but now that same person may require four cups to feel the same.  

As with many other drugs, when a person consumes caffeine, the brain releases extra dopamine, which wakes you up and makes you feel good.  With a mild to moderate caffeine addiction, an individual will experience withdrawal symptoms 12-24 hours after their last caffeinated beverage.  Severe caffeine addiction can induce withdrawal symptoms within 3 hours, which can include headache, depression, nausea, vomiting, lethargy, muscle pain and stiffness, and irritability.  Severe caffeine addiction can cause unbearable headaches that last for days.  

A person suffering from caffeine addiction may have mild to severe insomnia.  It’s pretty likely if you’re drinking four or more caffeinated beverages per day that you’re going to have difficulty sleeping.  The recommended daily caffeine limit is a very generous 600 ml, which amounts to about 5 8 ounce cups of coffee.  If you drink any more than that, even with a high tolerance, your body is going to portray physical addictions signs, such as shaking, inability to think, rapid heart rate, and increased blood pressure.  Caffeine can be just as deceptive as other drugs, but many don’t realize because of it’s legality and lack of obvious negative effects.  If you or someone you love is suffering from a caffeine addiction, help is right around the corner.
